After ferrying Nat and Grull over to the far side of the river, Jacoby and Blue entered the canoe, allowing it to drift southward. The boat looked like a floating barge of marsh flotsam, thanks to the camouflaged sides of the craft with mud, eel grass and cattails applied by the elf and Nathaniel. Jacoby and Blue also heaped scurvy grass over their shoulders and mud to their faces, adding to the ruse. The sun was rising to mid-day, the heat beat down from above like an oppressive weight, causing sweat to form in pools on their necks and backs. When they got within a mile, they paddled to the shore for a final review of the plan.

Once all four were together, Jacoby said, “You two sneak ahead and get into position, and we’ll follow in the canoe. Wait for us to arrive near the bushes before attacking. I’ll set up a diversion which should help. Once Allai’nn is clear, come back with a vengeance.”

“What diversion?”, asked Nathaniel.

“I’m going to light the bushes on fire.”

“Wait,” said Grull, alarmed. “That’s too risky for Allai’nn.”

“We need to startle them, and take their mind off Allai’nn. You should be across to the islet by then anyway.”

Grull and Nathaniel looked at each other, brows furrowed in apprehension. “I don’t like it,” Grull stated, arms crossed. “Got a

better plan, let’s hear it,” Jacoby responded. No one spoke. Jacoby put his hand out, and all followed, laying their hands on his. “For Allai’nn!” all said together, and parted.
